On Friday Ooredoo hosted a press conference to update the Myanmar people on its progress and announce further details about its commitment to develop a high quality telecommunications network across the country, to contribute to the growth of the Myanmar economy and to benefit Myanmar citizens across all of the country’s states and regions.

Following the announcement on June 27 that Ooredoo had been successful in its bid for one of two mobile telecommunications licences in Myanmar, Ooredoo has spent the past six weeks establishing itself and laying the foundation for its business to become an integral part of the Myanmar community.

Ross Cormack, senior representative for Ooredoo in Myanmar said: “Ooredoo is immensely proud and honoured to be a chosen partner of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar. As we begin to lay our foundations in the country we are focused on delivering our vision of enriching the lives of Myanmar people. Our ambition is to become the country’s communications provider and employer of choice and we are dedicated to helping propel Myanmar forward economically and technologically while making a meaningful contribution and social impact through affordable and easy mobile access for all.”

Ooredoo will offer a wide range of mobile communications services beyond voice and data to improve the lives of Myanmar consumers and help businesses run more efficiently. This will include the development of a comprehensive portfolio of life enriching services including mobile money services, a range of mobile health services, and services to support farmers and agriculture leveraging on its experience in launching those services in other markets.

Ooredoo will roll out these services using a large distribution network which will quickly reach beyond Myanmar’s cities into the country’s rural areas.  The Company will leverage this network in deploying innovative solutions across 3G networks using       2100 and 900 frequencies, bringing data services to where there has previously only been voice. Over a period of five years, Ooredoo has committed to nationwide geographic coverage of 84% (both voice and data), which equates to around 97% of the population.

Across all of its businesses one of Ooredoo’s unique characteristics is its strong focus on delivering the best customer experience.  In Myanmar the company’s main priority is to deliver an impeccable end to end customer experience at all touch points, from network to service centres.  To achieve this Ooredoo will use state of the art multimedia contact channels including interactive self-service tools and will staff its contact centre and face-to-face service centres with well-trained customer-champions ready to assist customers with any query.

Ross Cormack continued: “In keeping with our corporate values, and the strong commitment to corporate responsibility shown across all of businesses, we will work hard to make a difference in all of the communities across Myanmar and to care for the wellbeing of our customers. Furthermore, we strongly believe in recruiting in country and will ensure transfer of skills and know-how as we build out our Myanmar team.  This team will apply all of our global and regional best practice to deliver easy-to-use, customer friendly and life-enhancing services to the benefit of everyone living and working in the country.”

Ooredoo has pledged to invest in the Myanmar economy and contribute to the social development of the country. Ooredoo has promised US$60 million in corporate responsible investment for activities in Myanmar over the next 10 years which will promote universal access, help to educate the next generation and support better healthcare across the whole of the country.

Ross Cormack commented: “To share a real example of our genuine focus on the community, last week we pledged to assist the Ministry of Social Welfare in its efforts to help people suffering from the floods affecting the country.  We are committed to making a difference in the community, and to showing our customers in Myanmar that they can rely on us to deliver on these promises.”

Ooredoo is currently building the management team which will drive its progress in Myanmar and expects to be able to announce further details shortly, with appointments effective upon the Company receiving approval from the relevant Myanmar authorities.

Ross Cormack concluded: “Through our strong and enduring partnership with the country, we will seek to cultivate and retain an individual and uniquely Myanmar identity. We are fully committed to supporting Myanmar for the long term.”
