Indosat’s mMoney scheme, Dompetku, was awarded “Best Mobile Money Deployment in Asia” last week at the 2013 Mobile Money Global Awards for its fast deployment of this life-enriching service in Indonesia, its efficient and unique model of deployment and the wide range of banking and finance options the service offers.

Indosat, the second largest telecommunication operator in Indonesia by revenue and the largest subsidiary of the Ooredoo Group, launched its Dompetku Mobile Wallet and Mobile Money Service in July 2013 in partnership with QNB Kesawan.

The strategic partnership between Indosat and QNB Kesawan, a leading bank with more than 100 years’ experience in Indonesia which now has Qatar National Bank as majority shareholder, is another indication of the strong links that exist between the leading companies of Qatar and Indonesia. Indosat and QNB Kesawan developed the service after signing a strategic agreement in April 2012 that aimed to promote key services for customers.

Available on smart, feature and basic handsets, the service targets Indonesia’s unbanked, which amounts to approximately 60% of the population.  Providing these customers with access to a comprehensive suite of mobile financial services, the service offers those who do not have bank accounts or easy access to financial services a low cost alternative.

Alexander Rusli, CEO, President Director and Director of PT Indosat tbk commented: “With a population of over 250 million people and mobile phone penetration of over 100%, but banking penetration of only 40%, Indonesia is one of the World’s most attractive countries for mobile finance.  The progress of our 15-strong mobile money team has been truly remarkable and in the first three months of offering the service alone they built up a subscriber base of 800,000 and formed over 5,000 active retailer partner agreements.  We are proud to support and empower those people and communities who lack access to financial services and can see in the strong take-up of these services that there is a need among underserved communities for this type of practical initiative.”

“We are delighted that the team’s successful deployment of the Dompetku service has been recognised by our industry peers as one of, if not the, best in Asia.  Their work does not stop here however and we will continue to support them in their endeavours as they look to expand upon the programme and build out the subscriber base in 2014 and thereafter.”

Dr. Nasser Marafih, Group CEO, Ooredoo, added: “Having recently passed the one million mobile money customer milestone across our global footprint we are proud to support underserved communities who lack access to financial services. The strong take-up by our customers demonstrates the demand for easy-to-use, safe, and affordable alternatives to traditional banks across our key markets, and underlines the new and positive role that communication companies can play in empowering individuals.”

Voted for by an international community of senior mobile money professionals the Mobile Money Global Awards celebrate the hard work of organisations who have worked tirelessly to build, establish and deploy successful mobile money programmes across the world.  The industry renowned Global Awards Ceremony enables companies to share their achievements in the mobile money sector with a senior audience of over 500 mobile money and digital payment industry executives.
