Two of Ooredoo’s leading companies won awards at the Telecoms World Middle East Awards in Dubai this week, as the company continues to win regional and international plaudits for its international expansion and focus on human growth.
Ooredoo Group and Asiacell received the award for “Best International Growth Strategy” for their success in growing their customer base in Iraq, generating higher revenues and increasing the range and diversity of services available for customers in one of the region’s most challenging markets.
Nawras in Oman won the “Best Operator Network” award, in recognition of their success in rolling-out ultrafast 4G LTE and delivering on its Network Turbocharging programme for the whole country.
Dr. Nasser Marafih, Group CEO, Ooredoo, said: “Ooredoo has received awards for a number of notable achievements in 2013, which reflects the diversity of our operations and also the extent to which everyone in the company is committed to delivering life-enriching services for our customers. Our strong results in Iraq and the innovation and reliability of Nawras’ network are both the result of hard work and dedication on the part of our employees, and I congratulate the teams involved.”
Judges cited Asiacell’s “Almas” line as one of the most innovative services offered to women in emerging markets that helped distinguish the company in a competitive category. The launch of the Almas line has worked to empower women in Iraq by boosting women’s access to mobile technology and closing the mobile gender gap.
Since launching the service in April 2011, Asiacell has seen an incredible response. More than two million female customers have joined Asiacell and the proportion of female customers in its customer base has grown from 20 percent to 40 percent. The Almas service was recognised at the Global Mobile Awards earlier in the year, where it won GSMA mWomen Best Mobile Service for Women in Emerging Markets
For Nawras, the “Best Operator Network” award demonstrates the impact of its Network Turbocharging programme, which has transformed the customer experience in Oman.
Nawras is strengthening the indoor coverage of its “turbocharged” 3G+ network by transmitting 3G on the 900 MHz and 2100 MHz spectrum. This enables customers to have a better online experience at home, at work or on the go – with faster broadband data download speeds and smoother Internet browsing. The company is committed to delivering 3G+ to nearly the whole population by the end of 2014 and successfully launched 4G services in February 2013.
The two awards are the latest in the run of local, regional and global recognition received by Ooredoo. Earlier this year, Ooredoo received three major awards at the Global Telecoms Business Innovation Awards, held in London in June, and the company won the “Best Mobile Operator” award at the TMT Finance Middle East Awards.
